Nervous System Literacy in Education

A neuroscience-informed framework helping schools build regulated classrooms, resilient staff teams and sustainable leadership cultures.

"Throughout my 20 year teaching career, I have seldom come across the nervous system as a core focus within institutions yet it is the one uniting factor amongst us all. Entire school communities- leaders, teachers, parents and pupils alike should become literate about our individual and collective nervous systems.Nervous system regulation should no-longer be ignored in Education. It is time that it becomes the central focus of what we do if we are to truly impact sustainable change, co-regulation and positive life-long outcomes.I created the Nervous System Literacy Framework to bridge the gap that exists to provide lasting and impactful change in our communities'TNM

What is Nervous System Literacy?

NSL™ is a structured framework that teaches children and adults how the nervous system drives behaviour, attention, learning and leadership. NSL integrates Psychology, Neuroscience and Behavioural Science into practical language for classrooms, staff teams and school systems.NSL provides whole-school alignment with proven post-classroom impact.

Common challenges schools bring to NSL

Schools approach NSL™ when they are navigating:• Staff burnout and retention pressures
• Behaviour escalation and exclusions
• Inconsistent regulation approaches across staff
• SEND and SEMH complexity
• Leadership decision fatigue
• Whole-school culture shifts

What NSL changes in schools.

Schools are increasingly managing behaviour, wellbeing and attendance through reactive systems and policies that do not account for how nervous system states shape capacity, engagement and regulation. Staff burnout, escalation, exclusion and relational breakdown are not isolated issues- they are regulatory system failures, not individual deficits.NSL™ shifts schools from:• Surface behaviour management → physiological understanding
• Reactive leadership → regulated decision-making
• Compliance culture → capacity-based culture
• Staff burnout cycles → sustainable regulation
• Isolated interventions → system alignment

Who Educational NSL is for

NSL™ acknowledges the importance of nervous system literacy as inclusive practice and as such, it aims to impact change across all school systems:State Schools, Independent Sector, International Schools, Specialist and Alternative Settings, Phase-Specific Schools, Schools Serving High-Complexity Communities and Across All Official Ratings.

NSL is relevant across the full spectrum of UK educational settings. The framework supports schools navigating behaviour, wellbeing, learning readiness and system pressure regardless of sector, structure or Ofsted grading.

About the Founder

My name is Termaine and I have a deep passion for working with children and young people. I have taught across a variety of settings with leadership experience in EYFS and KS1 plus specialisation in whole school EAL and SEND. I am a qualified British Educator with international teaching experience.I transitioned out of the classroom in 2025 where I built a company and during that transition, an incredible thing happened- I repaired my nervous system! In simple terms, I moved from a 'threat dominant' nervous system to living with a 'safety based' nervous system. This change inspired me to support other individuals by moving them from simple 'awareness' that they have a nervous system towards a life where they prioritised their nervous systems. The changes were fast and evident with many pivoting careers, having tangible life changes and a desire for continued growth. Seeing this inspired me to work with children and young people so that they would not need to wait 20+ years to have a healthy nervous system baseline.I am currently based in the United Kingdom where I consult in different industries such as Education, Healthcare, Social work and Justice Systems but my passion always leads me back to working with children and young people. I believe that early interventions and practices lead to better later life outcomes.I created the NSL framework because 'we all matter'. As human beings, we co-regulate daily no-matter what environment we are in and ensuring that our environments and lifestyles are nervous system literate will benefit us on an individual, community and global level.'If not now, then when' comes to mind. For so long we have lived our lives ignoring our autonomic nervous systems yet a life where you centre your ANS is proven to achieve excellent results. I have seen the evidence of this myself and if we do not do that now, then when shall we start?
